CBS streaming free TV programming to iPhone users

Friday, 27 February, 2009

CBS Mobile has released TV.com, a free new mobile application that allows iPhone and iPod touch users to watch full episodes of select CBS shows and other programming over WiFi or 3G mobile networks.

The new app is the first example of an iPhone application providing free TV content directly from a TV studio in the US; the BBC already streams its free content to iPhone users in the UK using its iPlayer app.

CBS is pushing TV.com in competition with the Viacom-backed Joost and Hulu, a joint effort between NBC and Fox, to reach audiences beyond the TV and deliver a “direct to users” model of web-oriented offerings. Hulu currently does not have a mobile app for the iPhone like TV.com’s offering. Joost does provide a player app for its content, but it does not use the standard QuickTime player on the iPhone.

Sling teases iPhone owners

Wednesday, 7 January, 2009

Sling Media says it is developing a new version of its SlingPlayer that would allow owners of iPhone to access TV programming from their home on their mobile phones.

In an example of deployment by press release, Sling,  which timed its announcement for the opening of the Macworld confab in San Francisco, says it hopes to submit the SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone to Apple executives for certification during the first quarter.

But Sling says it doesn’t know how the product will be priced, and the company also didn’t say when iPhone users will actually be able to access their cable TV or satellite programming from their mobile phones.

Softbank’s One-Seg iPhone TV tuner handled

Monday, 5 January, 2009

Firms are determined to set up Mobile TV capability on smartphone iPhone as the main application.

Softbank recently announced  their 1-Seg TV  tuner/battery pack add-on for Japanese iPhone 3Gs. The Japanese iPhone 3G was criticized for its lack of an integrated TV tuner, and the One-Seg TV tuner accessory was to be Softbank´s answer. The external TV tuner connects to the iPhone 3G over WiFi, streaming the TV stream to the iPhone 3G.

Unfortunately, there’s the issue of power drain. Even with the integrated battery pack, you’re only going to get about an hour’s worth of TV viewing before your iPhone 3G starts complaining about low battery charge.

Wi-fi TV shows on iPhone offered by Joost

Wednesday, 24 December, 2008

Web video service Joost is looking to the iPhone for a big comeback.

Joost was one of the first services to take the idea of watching TV shows online. But after launching last year to much fanfare, it was eclipsed by newer sites such as Hulu and Veoh.

Earlier this month, however, Joost got a head start on its competitors with a free iPhone application that lets you watch TV shows from CBS, Comedy Central, Warner Bros. and Sony at no charge over a Wi-Fi connection.

Joost’s application doesn’t work on Apple partner AT&T’s 3G phone network. That means you can’t access TV shows if you’re standing in line at a movie, waiting for a live sporting event or sitting in the back seat of the car and bored silly — unless there’s Wi-Fi.

Some days ago we reported that Babelgum is working on an application to offer VOD content for iPhone´s users and also LiveStation in developing and application that would offer live TV on iPhones
